Rapidly increasing capabilities and decreasing costs are making microcomputers ever more likely to find a significant role in education. Already valuable as management tools, the computers have shortcomings as instructional aids largely due to lack of adequate software. Rapidly increasing demand could provoke dramatic improvements in software in the near future. The Oakridge (Oregon) School District, a relatively small district, has been including computer instruction among its offerings at the middle and high school levels since the late 1960s. As a result of its experiences and the success of its students, the district is more committed to computers now than ever. During the two years from 1979 to 1981 the number of microcomputers used in schools in Oregon as a whole increased 800 percent and statewide organizations have developed several services to aid computer users in education throughout the state.
