Enrollment in noncollegiate postsecondary schools with occupational programs was 1.9 million in 1982, approximately the same level as in 1980, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). This finding is from the sixth biennial NCES survey of 7,603 noncollegiate postsecondary schools with occupational programs. Overall, 9,208 postsecondary schools offered occupational training programs in 1982 (7,603 noncollegiate). Nearly 25 percent of the schools were classified as cosmetology/barber schools, 14 percent were business/commercial schools, and 11 percent were community/junior colleges. More than 65 percent of the schools were proprietary, and another 14 percent were independent nonprofit institutions. Only 20 percent were public (mostly colleges and universities). California had both the highest number of schools (1,043) and the largest number of students in occupational programs (248,000). Other states with large numbers of students were New York, Michigan, Florida, and Pennsylvania. The majority of students were full-time, with slightly more than half being women. Almost 65 percent of all schools were either accredited or eligible for federal student grant or loan programs. (Five tables are included in this early release.) (KC)
