- Summary:
-
The Career Intern Program (CIP), inititated by the Opportunities Industrialization Centers of America (OIC/A) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1972, is an alternative high school for dropouts and potential dropouts and for youth who are otherwise educationally and economically disadvantaged and unemployable. CIP operates with the endoresment of, and cooperative support from, local school systems and involves all segments of society, from family and peers to business and industry. After 10 years of rigorous testing and evaluation, the evidence shows that CIP has been instrumental in helping thousands of youth to complete high school and enter into postsecondary education, training, and employment situations. This publication begins with a discussion of CIP's background and its roots in OIC/A. Next comes a brief description of the program, covering recruitment, the intake interview, orientation, curricular design, and the three phases of program design: career awareness, career exploration, and career specialization. The greater part of the publication is devoted to providing samples of the thoughts, perceptions, and opinions of those who support CIP. This support comes from the business and industrial communities, local school systems, and colleges and training institutions, as well as from professionals, social service and community agency personnel, parents, interns, and researchers. Lists of CIP supporters and CIP graduates and their placements are appended. (CMG)
