This document contains two curriculum guides, the first dealing with accountability skills and the second with social skills. The guides are products of project GOAL (Guidance Opportunities for Affective Learning), a program intended to meet the social/emotional needs of handicapped mainstreamed students in grades K-6 by improving classroom behavior, academic achievement, self concept, and career decisionmaking skills. In both guides, the curriculum includes parallel primary and intermediate lessons, while the lessons provide information on goals, materials, procedures, and summaries. The first guide, on accountability skills, focuses on ways in which students learn to take responsibility for their own behavior. It encourages students to examine their emotions and be aware of their feelings and of how their actions affect others. Lessons address such topics as agreements for the group, visualization for problem solving, reasons and excuses, and time management. The social skills curriculum is designed to develop awareness of three types of behavior: passive, aggressive, and assertive. Puppets are a vital part of the lessons, which cover such topics as developing assertive behavior, expressing positive and negative feelings, giving and receiving compliments, developing listening skills, and responding to criticism.
