The Science Council of Canada conducted a 4-year study on science education in Canadian elementary and secondary schools. The study reached the conclusion that renewal science education is essential. This report analyzes the study's findings and presents recommendations for bringing about this renewal. The report is organized in four sections. The first section examines why science should be studied, considering science for the informed citizen, for further education, for the world of work, and for personal development. The second section discusses science for every student, and issues related to the intended curriculum, the planned curriculum, and the taught curriculum. The third section discusses eight ways in which the renewal of science education can be initiated. They include providing science education for all elementary school students, encouraging girls to continue science throughout their schooling, making sure that science education includes how science, technology and society interact, and the inclusion of technology courses in the secondary school curriculum. The fourth section presents some of the recommendations for facilitating the renewal of science education, including those related to teachers/teacher education, resources, and curriculum development.
