A cooperative program of teacher education involving a university, public schools, and the community is built on formal agreements for joint responsibility in teacher training and depends upon clear communication among all participants. In this paper, the structure, areas of responsibility, and lines of communication are described for five cooperative ventures: (1) a university nursery school, which is a traditional laboratory school with emphasis on students working with families in the community; (2) a day care center, a joint project of the university and the county community action council; (3) an early practicum and teacher exchange, run cooperatively by the university and the local school district; (4) cooperation between a local elementary school and the elementary and early childhood department of the university; and (5) a committee of teachers and administrators working with university faculty and students to provide schooling for a small rural mountain area.
