Recent research on sex differences in career and achievement motivation have used one dimensional definitions for the constructs. To investigate sex differences in four dimensions of career motivation, one dimension of achievement motivation, and three clusters of antecedent factors for young women and men, 212 high school graduates (112 females, 100 males), who were 3 years out of high school, completed a battery of career and achievement motivation tests. Data on background characteristics, self-concept factors, and environmental context factors were collected also. An analysis of the results indicated that females endorse a feminine sex role orientation, demonstrate more academic achievement, and are more satisfied with their current role. Males endorse a masculine sex role orientation and are more committed to an occupational career. These findings highlight information on intervention needs of use to the practitioner. (BL)
