This paper examines the professionalism in early childhood education through a systematic view of its pertinent characteristics, problems, and outlooks. First, some terms basic to the discussion are defined. Second, the basic characteristics of a profession are delineated, and early childhood teaching and program administration are discussed as potential professions. Third, five major changes in the early childhood field as it moves toward greater professionalization are contemplated. Fourth, the "natural history of professionalization" is described as an inevitable path of the early childhood field; drawbacks to professionalization are considered. Last, current endeavors of a national early childhood organization as well as several recommendations are considered in an effort to promote professionalization. (RH)
