This report presents information on a cooperative agricultural education program conducted between the Kern Community College District and the Kern High School District which was designed to improve agricultural education and respond to the needs of local agricultural employers. Introductory material presents a history of relations between the Kern high school and community college districts; and outlines the role of the Advisory Committee which was set up to make recommendations regarding development of an agricultural instructional program articulated from high school through community college. Next, results are provided of a survey designed to determine the personnel needs of various segments of agriculture in Kern County and to provide appropriate training to meet those needs. Results of the survey of 48 firms are then summarized and include the perception that the most pressing needs in local agriculture were for agricultural mechanics, agricultural production workers, and personnel to work in agribusiness. After a discussion of cooperative efforts between the two districts, the plan for future cooperation - based on the two-plus-two concept which was designed to facilitate student progress through high school and community college courses - is presented. The following section presents the agricultural curriculum in the high school and community college districts including current and proposed programs, and the general education component. Finally, information on the students, facilities and costs, and evaluation/modification procedures are highlighted. Appendices include a list of advisory committee members, the articulation agreement, and the survey instrument and results. (HB)
