A project was conducted in Bergen County, New Jersey, to develop a technical high school for students who are gifted and talented in science, mathematics, and the technologies. Through a hands-on approach to learning, the curricular disciplines were integrated to bring life and meaning to abstract principles and theories and to give students an opportunity to release their own creative energies by discovering practical links between theory and physical reality. Research and analysis for the project included two detailed studies in Bergen County--one that questioned local superintendents and one that examined student performance in advanced placement examinations. Research also included a study of American education in science and mathematics and a review of national reports. Educators from the county, from other technical high schools, and from universities were consulted during the development of the project. The work was performed by a researcher hired exclusively for this project, as well as three other staff persons and the school superintendent. As a result of the research, the following products were created: (1) a philosophy and framework for the technical high school; (2) a four-year curricular plan that included mathematics, physics, computer science, chemistry, biology, mechanical and electronic technologies; (3) procedures for selection of students, facilities and equipment, teaching and counseling staff, school schedule, and transportation procedures; and (4) public relations efforts. (Supporting documents are included in this report.) (KC)
