Four newsletter issues examine aspects of rural special education. Issue number one considers the generic problems or solutions in rural special education leadership, the need for innovative preservice preparation for rural educators, preservice training for Native American professionals and paraprofessionals, a model for rural early intervention, a collaborative college-school district preservice approach, and potentially generic problem-solving strategies. Issue 2 focuses on rural transition programs, with articles on program needs, federal initiatives, problem solving strategies, summaries of exemplary rural transition program, and a review of a 1984 national conference on partnerships between schools and the private sector in rural America. Issue 3 centers on rural family-professional relationships and includes information on parent-professional partnerships in Vermont and Alaska, problem solving strategies, and resources and programs. Issue 4 presents an article on educational assessment in rural areas, along with responses of four persons to the authors' proposed model. Additional articles address prevention of exploitation, cost effectiveness considerations in delivering school psychology services, rural scholarship information, summaries of resources and exemplary programs, and a discussion of administrative and judicial treatment of retarded adults in trouble.
