- Summary:
-
A review of classroom teachers' records of student attendance covering a 2-year period revealed that 18 students in the first grade at Dangerfield Primary School in Fremont, Illinois, frequently did not attend school. Further investigation showed that the parents of the frequently absent children had very little or no contact with the school. The overall goal of this practicum was to develop and increase parental involvement in the education of the primary school child and thereby improve the attendance patterns of the targeted 18 primary students. Strategies implemented in the intervention consisted of providing incentives that attracted both parents and students to school and included personal contact by telephone, home visits, newsletters, and workshops. The need for parents to be involved in the education of their children was constantly reinforced. Absenteeism among the 18 students was reduced by 80 percent. Fourteen of the 18 parents of the targeted students became more involved than previously in the classroom program. Related materials are appended, including forms, survey instruments, parent meeting agenda, and homework activities for parents and children. (RH)
