The document outlines steps in the process of developing intervention assistance teams, which are described as school-based, problem-solving groups whose purpose is to assist teachers with intervention strategies for dealing with students' learning needs and interests. Objectives include the following: (1) to enable the school district's instructional program to meet a broader range of student needs; (2) to offer structured support and assistance to teachers; (3) to help teachers vary their instructional strategies to meet individual needs; (4) to reduce the number of inappropriate referrals for multifactored evaluation. Typically implemented at the individual building level, positions represented on the team may include the principal, regular and special class teachers, guidance counselor, media specialist/librarian, school psychologist, curriculum specialist, special education supervisor, and school nurse. Sections of the document describe data collection (indicators of need) and preliminary planning to set up the teams; proposal development and approval (including team member responsibilities and operational policies and procedures); implementation (including staff development); and maintenance of effective team operation. References and sample forms are included in the appendix. (JW)
