- Summary:
-
This study investigates the strength of relationships between direct measures (holistic scores for free writing samples) and indirect measures (the Test of Ability to Subordinate) of attained writing proficiency in English as a second language. Subjects were 67 undergraduate foreign language students enrolled in Basic Composition for Foreign Students at Southern Illinois University. Substantial magnitudes of correlation between the two measures were found. Stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated that both direct and indirect measures of writing accounted for substantial variance in a direct measure variable. Explanations of the remaining variance in the dependent variable are offered, limitations of the study are discussed, and suggestions are offered for future research using this paradigm. (Author/MSE)
