The results of interviews conducted with 48 freshman writing/composition teachers in 11 two-year colleges in California are summarized in this report. After brief descriptive comments introducing each interview topic, responses are summarized by college to the following questions: (1) What placement procedures are used to assign students to freshman composition classes? (2) What texts and other materials do you use and what are your criteria for their selection? (3) What kinds of writing assignments and topics do you generate and why? (4) Does your course include journal writing? How do you use it? What is its value? (5) How do you correct papers? How do you determine grades? What are your achievement expectations? (6) Do you use tutors? Why or why not? (7) What personal qualities and teaching techniques are required to successfully teach this course? (8) What is your philosophy of teaching writing? (9) In what environment does the best writing take place? (10) How do you account for audience in writing? (11) How do you motivate students to write? and (12) What is the relationship between teaching grammar and teaching writing? Sample writing assignments, evaluation instruments and scales, and comments about teaching freshman composition are included with the responses. (LAL)
