Past research has shown that there are predictable relationships among personality types, work values, and occupational interests. A study was conducted to compare graduate students of industrial psychology with graduate students of business administration with regard to hypothesized differences in work values and personality types. It was hypothesized that the psychology group would consist of social types with intrinsic work values, while the business group would consist of conventional types with extrinsic work values. Psychology (N=44) and business administration (N=92) graduate students completed Holland's Vocational Preference Inventory to determine personality type and Super's Work Values Inventory to determine work values. Support for the hypothesis regarding personality types was found for the psychology group but not for the business group. Although differences between groups were found, the hypothesis regarding intrinsic and extrinsic work values was not supported. While the personality types of the psychology and business groups were found to differ, the evidence suggests that, based upon the theoretical relationships between dominant types and Holland's occupational codes, the two groups shared similar personality characteristics and occupational interests.
