The purpose of the project described in this report was to investigate the feasibility of interactive microcomputer/videotape software for use in Texas vocational agriculture programs. An extensive literature review was conducted to determine the value of videotaped and interactive videotaped lessons and to check what equipment and programs were available. The necessary interfaces between existing microcomputers and videotape hardware commonly found in Texas were determined. Project investigators then developed the interactive video software for a course on auto mechanics and pilot tested 2 lessons on small engine operation and maintenance with 55 students from 4 Texas high schools. (Handicapped students were included.) Students were divided into two groups: one control group which was taught with video and the other which received instruction by interactive video. Students were tested for immediate recall and by a posttest about one week later. Each test consisted of two questions. As measured by the immediate recall test, interactive video was rated a significantly superior method of presenting selected small gasoline engine topics; however, the posttest showed no significant difference between the outcomes of the two methods. Further recommendations were made for further research using more students, more questions, and more subject areas before implementing interactive video technology. (The report presents a detailed, step-by-step description of the production of the interactive videotape lessons. A seven-page bibliography is provided; the appendixes include the student tests.)
