This book presents a range of strategies for adult literacy tutors and offers a wealth of practical advice on teaching spelling within the context of writing. Chapters 1-3 offer basic information on talking with the student about spelling, finding out how the student spells and helping the student to see himself/herself as a "good" speller, and teaching and learning spelling. Chapters 4-7 suggest techniques for teaching spelling. Chapter 4 describes rote writing. Chapter 5 suggests six techniques for emphasizing the visual aspects of spelling. They are "go out and look," flashcards, word jigsaw, picture jigsaw, word completion, and hidden words. Chapter 6 describes three techniques that emphasize the auditory aspects of speaking, in which an understanding of the relationship between sound and symbol provides the student with further strategies for achieving accurate spelling. The techniques are adapted pronunciation, rhymes and jingles, and mnemonics. Chapter 7 covers three logical methods to spelling--discovering syllable patterns, discovering suffix spelling patterns, and discovering "probable" and "possible" spellings. Chapters 8-10 deal with dictionary skills, the role of dictation in learning to spell, and special problems. (YLB)
