This issue of "Network News" focuses on efforts to remedy the dropout problem. The following programs' common goal is not only to retain students through graduation, but to ensure that they acquire the skills necessary to take their place as productive members of society: (1) the Classroom Partners Project, a collaborative effort between Public Television Station WTVS in Detroit, Michigan; and the Detroit Public Schools; (2) Twelve Together, a program of ninth grade support groups in Detroit; (3) the Industrial Arts Work Experience Renovation Project, a work-study pilot program in Jersey City, New Jersey; (4) the ninth grade orientation project in Seattle, Washington; (5) the Urban Middle Schools Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program, a new national demonstration program by the Academy for Educational Development; and (6) the Westside Organization Network, to encourage parent involvement at Sidney Lanier High School in San Antonio, Texas. In addition to those program descriptions, the following articles are also included: (1) an interview with Dr. Arthur Jefferson, general superintendent of the Detroit Public Schools; (2) a summary of difficulties faced in comparing the dropout rates of schools or school districts; (3) a summary of an analysis of the Hispanic Policy Development Project (HPDP) on the dropout problem among Hispanic students; (4) a discussion of the rural dropout problem; (5) discussion of an initiative to increase attendance and school participation among Appalachian students in Cincinnati, Ohio; and (6) announcement of Excellence in Education Award to John F. Kennedy High School, Bronx, New York. (PS)
