The global history course syllabus, Theme III, entitled, "Changes in Thought and Action Led to the Emergence of the Modern World," focuses on the European impact upon the world as well as the cross-cultural influences which resulted in important developments such as the Commercial Revolution. These influences include contributions of the non-Western societies and those on the fringe of Western civilization. This theme contains 12 subthemes: (1) The Ancient Greeks Influenced All Western Civilization; (2) Classical Culture Was Disseminated throughout the Roman Empire; (3) The Middle Ages Was a Transitional Period in European History; (4) The Mongols Established Vast Empires in Europe and Asia; (5) The Nation-State Became the Basic Form of Political Organization: Spain, a Case Study; (6) The Byzantine Empire Preserved and Disseminated Culture during the Middle Ages; (7) The Ottoman Turks Fused Elements of Byzantine and Muslim Cultures; (8) The Renaissance Represented a Rediscovery of Classical Civilization and Reawakened Interest in Worldly Matters in Europe; (9) The Scientific Revolution Challenged Traditional Attitudes and Beliefs; (10) The Age of Discovery Created a Network of Global Contacts; (11) The Reformation and Counter-Reformation Ended Religious Unity in the West; and (12) The Commercial Revolution Introduced an Age of Economic Interdependence. Included are learning activities which contain the rationale, performance objectives, and teaching strategies. The suggested calendar of lessons serves as a guide for teaching global history on a daily basis. (KWL)
