Interaction between faculty and students outside the formal classroom was characteristic of early residential colleges. Increased enrollments and faculty commitments to research, however, have decreased the amount of time students and faculty spend together outside the classroom. Research has shown that such faculty-student interaction has a positive relationship to student retention, achievement, and satisfaction. National reports on the condition of higher education suggest that colleges should work to increase the amount of faculty-student interaction beyond the classroom environment. The possible ways to structure faculty interactions with students in the residential environment are numerous. This document presents information regarding faculty-student residential programs from colleges and universities in Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia. For each university, programs are described briefly and the name and telephone number of the contact person for the program is given. Also included are excerpts from "Involvement in Learning: Realizing the Potential of American Higher Education" and a list of suggested readings. (NB)
