Narrative and statistical summaries are presented of the results of the 1986 Residence of First-Time Student survey, which is conducted as part of the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System by the National Center for Education Statistics. The analysis is based on data reported on degree-seeking students by the 2,743 colleges and universities in the 50 States and the District of Columbia (D.C.) that responded to the survey. In fall 1986, 15% of the first-time freshmen in U.S. higher education institutions crossed a state line to attend college. Net migration is defined as the difference between the number of first-time freshmen who come into a state to attend college and the number who leave their home state to attend college elsewhere. Data are provided on the net migration of all first-time freshmen for each state and D.C. Thirty-one states had a net gain of first-time freshmen in 1986, while 20 states experienced net losses. Additional results include: 34% of all first-time freshmen and 32% of all out-of-state first-time freshmen were enrolled in public four-year institutions; and 86% of the students enrolled in these schools were state residents, with only eight states having fewer than 75% from within the state.
