Project COMPETE was designed to promote the successful transition of students with severe handicaps from school to adult life and work in integrated community settings. The project developed an instructional program, trained staff members of the Nassau County (New York) Board of Cooperative Educational Services, recruited jobs for the students, and provided on-the-job support. This guide contains four major sections: (1) "Individual Education Plan/Transition Plan," which contains an overview and sample forms to use to identify student educational needs and to link the student to post-graduation community life; (2) "Systematic Instruction Guidelines," which covers planning effective instruction in natural environments based on the student's objectives, including instructional plan development, instructional plan implementation, and behavior plan development; (3) "Vocational Curriculum," which provides guidelines for developing competitive, supported employment; and (4) "Daily Living and Recreation/Leisure Catalogs," which lists age-appropriate, functional, referenced activities developed with the goal of helping students become independent and active members of their communities. References specific to sections 2-4 are provided, and appendices contain systematic instruction component forms and vocational curriculum forms. (JDD)
