Findings on the nature and extent of minority underrepresentation in higher education are presented, and the status of minority students at various transition points from high school through graduate school is described. The primary data source was the Higher Education General Information Survey. The racial/ethnic differences in the extent to which minorities are underrepresented are examined by high school completion and dropout rates, trends in enrollment, trends in degree attainment, the composition and size of the minority talent pool, and the transition points where the magnitude of loss is greatest. Black and Hispanic students are the groups of primary interest; however, data on American Indian and Asian-American students are reported where available. Eight sections discuss the following: introductory material; the data and methodology; minority precollege education; minority undergraduate education (trends in enrollments, two-year/four-year transfers, baccalaureate degree attainment); the minority talent pool (minorities in the Graduate Record Examination applicant pool); the transition from undergraduate to graduate school (competing post-baccalaureate career choices); graduate education (enrollment, graduate/professional degrees); the role of traditionally Black institutions in graduate education (composition and trends in traditionally Black institution enrollment, degree trends); and a research agenda that describes the issues to be addressed and the limitations involved in research on minorities in graduate education. Contains 30 tables, 6 figures, and 17 references. (SM)
