This handbook is intended to serve as a reference guide to position classification in Employment and Immigration Canada. It is divided into 11 chapters. Chapter 1 explains Canada's current job and wage classification system, which is a direct result of the Canadian government's decision to allow collective bargaining in the public service. Chapter 2, which is devoted to the uses of job descriptions, covers classification, staffing, and management philosophy. Circumstances necessitating updates in job descriptions are discussed next. Procedures for writing a job description (job identifications, job summaries, job duties and responsibilities, and organization charts) are outlined, and an example of a job description is presented. The roles and responsibilities of classification committees and classification officers are explained in a chapter on how a position is classified. Chapters 7 through 10 deal with the concepts of effective date, conversion, classification monitoring, and training courses. The final chapter, on classification grievances, covers time limits, employee rights, and the resolution process. This bilingual guide contains French and English versions of all chapters. (MN)
