Definitions of exactly what and who constitutes a mentor are almost as numerous as the writers who have researched the subject. Being a mentor may mean being a counselor, host, guide, teacher, developer of skills and intellect, and exemplar. Co-mentoring can offer a valuable alternative to conventional mentoring relationships that are either unavailable or inappropriate for some individuals. Co-mentoring is an intense mutual mentoring relationship that is common among peers but transcends age, rank, and organizational level boundaries. A seven-step model for establishing a co-mentor relationship includes these steps: (1) values clarification; (2) analysis of personal contributions to the relationship; (3) analysis of expectations; (4) information-gathering; (5) establishment of guidelines for selection; (6) choice of co-mentor; and (7) initiation of relationship. Within the context of mutual interaction, co-mentoring relationships can provide the intense, on-going personal and professional support key to a successful mentoring relationship. (ABL)
