- Summary:
-
This review of research on the influence of the cooperating teacher seeks to clarify the relationship between the preservice student teacher and the cooperating teacher, and to provide a better understanding of the student teaching experience. The expectations and the role of the cooperating teacher are reviewed and it is pointed out that, though the preponderance of research results supports the contention that the cooperating teacher has a profound influence on the preservice teacher, there are a number of studies that question this assumption. While changes have been noted in student teachers' attitudes from liberal toward authoritarian, it is suggested that this may be a result of being caught between the opposing viewpoints of the university and the school and not necessarily because of the influence of the cooperating teacher. A discussion is presented of the nature of the triadic relationship of cooperating teacher, student teacher, and university supervisor. An analysis is presented of research on the matching of the cooperating teacher and student teacher. Some conclusions and recommendations are offered and references are included. (JD)
