New York City (New York) has the longest continuous immigration history of any American city, and the largest and most varied foreign-born population, according to testimony presented in 1986 to the Joint Economic Committee of the United States Congress. Using data from the 1980 census, information in the following areas is provided: (1) demographics; (2) employment; (3) income and tax contributions; (4) use of publicly funded social programs; (5) undocumented aliens; and (6) implications for the future. Two tables illustrate some of the data. (BJV)
