A handbook of foundation grants information is provided. Today, there are nearly 25,000 foundations that support a wide variety of activities. On the average, foundations give educational institutions 37% of each grant dollar for requests ranging from capital support to program development and research. Because every foundation is unique, it is important that the prospective applicant or campus sponsored programs or grants officer complete several steps before presenting an idea to the foundation or writing a formal proposal. Four sections focus on the following: what foundations support (independent foundations, company/corporate sponsored foundations, community foundations, and operating foundations); how to identify potential foundations (exploring the possibilities and narrowing the list); coordination and commitment; and presenting the idea (initial contact and formal proposals). Even with careful preparation, not all proposals submitted to foundations will be funded. If a proposal is turned down, another try is suggested (first finding out why the proposal was not funded and asking for ideas on how to improve the presentation of the idea). Two appendices are: suggested resources (directories, grants listings, and corporate giving) and the Foundation Center Cooperating Collections Network (listed by state). (SM)
