There is increasing interest in integrated studies or the integrated curriculum at all levels of schooling. Integrated approaches reveal wide differences in interpretation of what integration actually means and how it can be accomplished within the school setting. Chapter 1 discusses the various meanings of integration and some approaches taken to achieve integration. Then chapter 2 addresses why there is a call for integration at all levels of schooling. Chapter 3 briefly describes nine integrative models. Chapter 4 describes the first draft of the elementary "Education 2000 Integrated Curriculum" in Eugene (Oregon) Public Schools. Chapter 5 contrasts integrated and traditional subject-centered curricula. In conclusion, the arguments in support of integrative education are summarized. (57 references) (SI)
