This annual report presents an analysis of faculty salaries at the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) for the 1989-90 academic year. An introductory section presents the rationale for the reports and its conclusions. Section 2, "Origins of Methods of Analysis," is concerned with the history of faculty salary reports, change in content and methodology, and the issue of law school faculty salaries. Section 3 is titled "Projected Salaries Required for Parity at California's Public Universities" (UC and CSU). It is estimated that for 1989-90, UC faculty members will require an average salary increase of 4.7% to bring them to the mean of their comparison group, and CSU salary increases of 4.81% are needed. Appended are: (1) Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 51, 1965 General Session, relative to academic salaries and welfare benefits; (2) methods for calculating salary and fringe benefit comparisons, 1985-86 to 1994-95; (3) House Resolution No. 250, 1964 First Extraordinary Session, relative to the economic welfare of the California public institutions of higher education; (4) a recommended method for reporting to the legislature on faculty salaries and other benefits; and (5) related letters with statistics.
