- Summary:
-
This handbook was created to prepare teachers who will work in non-credit English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) programs that are typically offered as a part of a larger Adult Basic Education (ABE) program. The handbook is designed to help these teachers to know which skills are included in language learning, the relative importance of these skills, the order in which to present them, and workable methods for teaching them. The following subjects are covered: (1) communication skills in ESL; (2) theory and methodology in second language instruction; and (3) the ESL curriculum. Additional information provided includes a materials list (such as textbooks and placement tests), professional resource lists (31 items), and several supplemental teaching aids (e.g., a communications competency checklist and games and songs).
