In 1990, a study was conducted of part-time faculty employed at Illinois public community colleges. Three types of analyses were used, each involving different data sources. Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) historical salary survey (1980-89) data were used to examine trends in the employment of part-time faculty. Fall 1989 ICCB faculty and staff data were analyzed to investigate the characteristics of current part- and full-time faculty. The American Association Community and Junior Colleges's (AACJC's) fall 1989 survey data were used to draw comparisons with other states. Study findings included the following: (1) the overall number of faculty decreased both in headcount (by 11.2%) and full-time equivalency (by 6.3%) in fall 1989 compared with the rest of the 1980s; (2) the number of part-time faculty experienced by 12.8%, compared to 7.2% for full-time faculty; (3) in the case of full-time equivalents (FTE), full-time faculty had a greater decrease (7.2%) than did part-time faculty (5.0%), indicating a trend toward a slightly greater reliance on part-time faculty for FTE positions; (4) during the 1980s, part-time instructors accounted for an average of 71.1% of the faculty headcount, but only 43% of the FTE devoted to instruction; (5) Illinois' usage of part-time faculty was slightly above that of the national average; (6) females and minorities were better represented among part-time faculty than full-time faculty; and (7) part-time faculty accounted for over 90% of the instructional staff in general studies, adult basic education, adult secondary education, and vocational skills. Appendixes and data tables provide detailed full- and part-time faculty statistics. (JMC)
