Intended to inform the governing board, administration, faculty and staff about the general characteristics of students served by Southwestern College (SWC), this annual student profile examines a number of demographic and educational characteristics of fall 1990 students. First, introductory sections provide an overview of demographic and enrollment trends, data sources, study limitations, and differences between day and evening students. The next section presents data on student demographics, including age, sex, ethnicity, employment status, marital status, and sources of financial support. Student program status is considered next in terms of residency patterns, admissions classification (i.e., new, continuing, or returning), and unit load. The final section contains data on students' goals and plans, including information on declared majors, educational objectives, and post-graduation plans. Data in each section are presented for both day and night students, and selected results from previous years' surveys are used to illustrate trends. Highlighted findings include the following: (1) 53% of the fall 1990 student population were female; (2) ethnic minorities comprised 48% of the total student body in 1980 and 65% in 1990, with Hispanics representing the largest ethnic group on campus; (3) 60% of the students worked full- or part-time while attending college, and 49% were self-supporting; (4) 76% of the day students and 45% of the evening students were single; (5) 98% were California residents; (6) among fall 1990 students, 30% were new students, 53% were continuing students, and 17% were returning students; (7) 27% were attending full-time; and (8) 46% intended to transfer to a four-year institution. The bulk of the report consists of data tables and graphs. (JMC)
