A project was conducted to gather data on the outcomes of homemaking and consumer education programs in Illinois. The project also developed instruments and processes that will allow teachers to gather data in their school districts and store the data using a microcomputer. Data collection instruments were based on outcome statements as reported in the Illinois "State Goals for Learning and Sample Learning Objectives" and task lists for the Occupation of Homemaking Program. Research was conducted on a stratified random sample of equal numbers of high school students who graduated between 1979 and 1984 who had been enrolled in two or more home economics classes and those students who had no more than one home economics class. Of a total of 2,015 students, 385 agreed to participate and 333 were interviewed by 20-minute telephone interviews using a Likert-type, 143-item scale. It was found that home economics concepts are considered very important for adult living by the graduates. Graduates who had been enrolled in home economics perceived themselves as significantly more competent in home economics concepts than those who had not been enrolled. Participation in home economics student organizations has an effect on both degree of importance and competence in home economics concepts. The concepts of relationships and management techniques are considered most important with areas in parenting and child development receiving the highest mean rating. Females consistently gave higher ratings to home economics concepts. As a result of the study, recommendations were made in the areas of curriculum development, teacher education, marketing, and further research. (The interview instrument, project correspondence, and fact sheets are appended.) (KC)
