This booklet shares strategies that schools can undertake to provide parents with opportunities, information, and skills they may need to support their children's education. The booklet recognizes the importance of addressing the needs of the whole family in order to break the intergenerational cycle of school failure. Parts 1 and 2 outline an approach to designing broad-based, needs-driven plan for involving families in their children's education. This approach encourages schools to: (1) identify and involve community-based organizations; (2) assess parents' needs for training and support; and (3) implement a range of strategies for connecting parents with their children's learning and with schools. Part Three describes 26 outreach strategies that emphasize reaching, educating, and empowering families that traditionally do not participate. The common denominator in these strategies is their focus on ways in which schools can collaborate with community resources to reach out to parents and expand family involvement in education. Appendix A examines the research on parent involvement, and Appendix B provides a bibliography of 54 citations. (RH)
