This document is the first in a series of surveys of U.S. youth on issues related to career planning and preparation, the image of business in society, and economic values. For comparative purposes, this study was conducted among U.S. and Japanese students. Specifically, the survey measured public opinion and behavior in the following areas: the image students have of the private sector in their society and the extent businessmen and women are valued as role models; students' values concerning money; students' interest in academic subjects and perceived importance of specific subjects; and students' post-high school educational and career plans and confidence in reaching their goals. Among the many findings of the survey were that, contrary to common stereotypes, U.S. students were more likely than their Japanese counterparts to receive high school training in computer science, business, and economics; and U.S. students were more likely to spend their extracurricular time going out and having fun, while Japanese students were more likely to spend their time with an academic tutor or doing homework. The report of the survey findings is followed by a copy of the questionnaire and a technical appendix designed to help determine the statistical significance of survey results. (DB)
