Numerous tables summarize quantitative data for the State of South Carolina and each school district in the state that are relevant to public education. Data for the 1989-90 school year are presented along with data beginning with the reference or base year of 1969-70. The state summaries include tabulated statistical data concerning the following: general information, state expenditures, enrollment, revenue, average teacher salaries, staffing, Chapter 1 programs, migrant students, remedial/compensatory students, handicapped students, vocational education, dropouts, basic skills assessment, cognitive skills assessment, statewide testing program, transportation, school food program, instructional television, adult education, graduates, Scholastic Aptitude Test scores, and average daily membership. The school district summaries provide tabulated statistical data concerning the following: enrollment, mills levied, expenditures, average teacher salaries, average principal salaries, average superintendent salaries, staffing, Chapter 1 programs, remedial/compensatory students, handicapped students, vocational education, basic skills assessment program, cognitive skills assessment, statewide testing program, adult education, dropouts, and graduates. It is noted that the number of students enrolled in grades 1 through 12 in South Carolina public and private schools decreased from 689,418 in 1969-70 to 625,015 in 1989-90, a decrease primarily due to lower birth rates in the state. However, the population of South Carolina and the Southeast increased 36% from 1970 to 1989, compared to a nationwide population increase of 21% during that same period. A county outline map showing school districts in South Carolina and a 27-item bibliography are appended. (RLC)
