On June 7, 1993 the Commission on Preservation and Access convened an international group of scholars, librarians, archivists, and information scientists to explore opportunities for international collaboration in saving the contents of libraries from loss through the embrittlement of the pages of their books. This conference was intended to increase awareness and concern about the problem of decaying library collections, to begin to build a European-centered effort, and to enlarge and solidify the cooperation between Europe and the United States. The conference began with a summary of preservation efforts so far, considering issues such as what to save and how to save it. The 23 conferees recognized the importance of raising the level of awareness about decaying books. It is important not to delay preservation efforts while waiting for a particular method to prove itself optimal. The most flexible, dependable, and economic efforts should be used at once, while trials of alternatives proceed. Recommendations of the conference create an ad hoc steering committee for initiating and supervising the process of constituting a European commission on preservation and access. An ad hoc committee was formed to begin this effort. The full text of the resolution and recommendations adopted by the conference are included in an appendix. (SLD)
