Written to emphasize the historical importance and continuing relevance of protest and reform in the United States, this teacher's guide offers new perspectives and approaches to the study and discussion of the populist, civil rights, and environmental movements in history and to protest in general. A timeline poster presents an overview of U.S. political protest from the early 19th century to the present. Following teaching suggestions and an introduction, each case study of the three movements contains a timeline of key events, a primary source of an individual's experience, an essay on the movement, a bibliography of works in the area, and questions for students to consider. The case studies focus on the stories of the three protest movements and emphasize the following: (1) the origin of or catalyst for change; (2) the people who created or joined the movement; (3) the tactics developed or used to effect change; (4) the responses of government and other institutions to the movement for change; (5) the short and long term achievements of the movement; and (6) the importance of protest and dissent to the U.S. political system.
