- Summary:
-
The main goal of this book is to provide an understanding of education and effective educational leadership, now and for the future. Although the book focuses on Canada, it presents widely applicable information. It examines how and why education changes in society, and how it can be effectively managed and led. The changing order in society and education, a situation of turbulence as society moves toward a multicultural vision, is described first. Next, the goals and an historical overview of education are covered. Then, results from research on teacher professionalism, sociological theory, and, in particular, an updated theory of bureaucracy that incorporates growing collectivist action are critically applied to the turbulence within education itself. Then, the theory and practice of educational management--past and present--are outlined. Law and finance are an initial focus. Educational administration/leadership is redefined as a moral science and art within a critical knowledge context. The book culminates in the presentation of "Educational Leadership with CONSCIENCE." Seven tables and 45 figures are included. Appendices describe the context of Canadian education; teachers' and administrators' responsibilities; social order, discipline, and student rights; and leadership and team-building research materials. An index is also included. (LMI)
