Eighth-grade students in New Jersey take the Early Warning Test (EWT), which involves reading, writing, and mathematics. Students with EWT scores below the state level of competency take a remedial mathematics course that provides students with computer-assisted instruction (2 days per week) as well as regular classroom instruction (3 days per week). The study was conducted using 73 ninth-grade students enrolled in the Kearny High School remedial course. The computer instruction provided is specifically designed to help students attain proficiency on the mathematics portion of a state-mandated high school proficiency exam. The students were retested with the "New Jersey Special Edition EWT-Grade 9" after 6 months of remediation, and the sample mean score (March 1994) was compared with the sample mean score (March 1993). Results indicated a statistically significant gain but more than 50% of the sample still needed further remediation. (Contains 26 references.) (MLB)
