Questionnaires covering evaluation strategies and practices were sent to directors of 200 camps accredited by the American Camping Association. Half received questionnaires designed to collect quantitative data in the form of yes/no responses and Likert scales; the other half received qualitative questionnaires covering the same information in an open-ended format. Responses were received for 54 quantitative and 31 qualitative instruments. Although the response rate for qualitative questionnaires was low, their use in conjunction with similar quantitative questionnaires provided an interpretive framework for the numerical data collected. All camp directors indicated some type of evaluation process ranging from highly structured procedures to fairly informal processes. Virtually all camps evaluated staff, administrative procedures, facilities, and the camping program at least once a year. The major responsibility for evaluation fell upon the director in most cases. Program improvement and planning were the major reasons for evaluation, with less concern given to accountability. Most evaluation data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and observations. Only one-fourth of directors used statistical techniques to analyze data. Evaluation results were discussed with staff and administration in 92 percent of camps, with board members in 54 percent, and with parents and campers in 15-19 percent. About half of the directors wrote reports and summaries. Most directors said they had learned about evaluation through doing, and less than half had any evaluation training. (SV)
