This paper addresses the difficulty involved in creating easily understood information. The act of communicating is not complete until the message has been both received and understood by the audience. Messages must always be comprehensible, otherwise they will have no effect. The readability, legibility, and reading value of a graphic message is important to the receiver's ability to understand it. The following factors should be considered when formulating messages that are comprehensible: audience interpretation, recognition, and response to pictorial messages; the process of designing and creating integrated verbo-visual information; the quality of language; message clarity; credibility and esthetics; terminology; the reading process; and costs. Includes advice on good writing, the key to comprehensibility: analysis, preparation, writing, using pictures, and the final touch-up. (Contains 20 references.) (AEF)
