This fastback summarizes the basic components of a therapeutic supervision model as a help for administrators in training and supervising teachers who are involved in advising students. Therapeutic supervision is designed to help all teachers understand the social, emotional, and intellectual dynamics of advising and helping students who may be emotionally needy. The focus of such training and supervision is to assist teachers in defining and maintaining professional boundaries, thereby avoiding allegations of sexual misconduct or impropriety. Two specific hazards must be addressed: the risk of stepping across professional boundaries and becoming too personally involved with students, a situation that can lead to actual or alleged sexual misconduct, and ignorance of legal liability issues which can lead to lawsuits based on charges of malpractice or misconduct. Several case studies in which teachers became involved in sexual misconduct with students are summarized. The therapeutic training and supervision model is described, covering training teacher-advisors, modeling advisory relationships, supervising teacher-advisors, and reorganizing and overcoming resistance to therapeutic supervision.
