MS 8495 comprises professional and personal papers documenting Margaret Walker's involvement in a variety of Australian and international dance organisations from the late 1930s to the 1980s. These organisations include the Borovansky Ballet, Ballets Russes, Colonel de Basil Ballet, New Theatre Company (Melbourne), Unity Dance Group (Melbourne), Roseville Dance Centre (Sydney), Australian Association of Dancers, Australian Association for Dance Education, Dance Concert, Margaret Walker Folk Dance Centre, Aboriginal Islander Dance Theatre and the Western Arts for Youth (Sydney). The archive consists of administrative records, correspondence, newsletters, diaries, theatre programmes, subject and biographical files, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, dance periodicals and photographs (83 boxes, 4 fol. boxes).
The MS Acc GB 1995.2505 instalment comprises files on administrative matters that deal with grant applications, superannuation, wages, orders for publications, conferences, and Committee of Management minutes and reports. There are also articles, cuttings, curricula vitae and photographs (2 cartons).
The Acc97.109 instalment comprises papers, audio cassettes and posters (2 boxes, 2 cartons, 1 small box, 1 poster box + 72 cassettes).
The Acc10.022 instalment comprises a card index of recorded music; published music including Treasury of music for the Australian home circle and Ralph de Boissiere Calypso Isle; publications on music including Music in the Soviet Union: two lectures given by Alan Bush, Ludwik Erhardt Contemporary music in Poland, Boris Yagolim Soviet music: musical education and music making (1946), A.L. Lloyd The singing Englishman; exhibition catalogue from Sound waves, Hollywood Bowl Museum, March 1986 (1 packet).

Dancer and dance activist. Margaret Evelyn Walker (née Frey) studied classical ballet at the Borovansky Ballet Academy in Melbourne in 1940 and became a founder and member of the Melbourne Ballet Club and the Borovansky Ballet Company. Walker furthered her interest in dance and theatre and in 1952 she founded the Association of Australian Dancers comprising a number of recreational dance groups. In 1967 she established a professional folk/character dance group called Dance Concert, remaining as artistic director until 1977. Walker was also founder and director of the Margaret Walker Folk Dance Centre, 1977-1988. During her career Walker fostered teaching programs, taught in schools, arranged tours for overseas teachers and choreographers in Australia, was involved with the New South Wales Branch of the Australian Association for Dance Education and choreographed the display of folkloric dance at the opening ceremony of the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane. In 1982 she was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for service to the performing arts. Walker died in Sydney in 1996.
