This book is designed to give new teachers the tools they need to follow their best instincts about what to do in their own classrooms. It also strives to assist experienced teachers who are on the edge of burnout in remembering what made them want to teach in the first place. The suggestions are designed to help teachers focus on why they originally decided to became teachers; see students as individuals with differences; ask for the help they need from their principals or from school support staff; maintain an open mind and a flexible attitude; pick battles with care; and use good common sense. The 10 commandments are as follows: (1) thou shalt have a calling to teach; (2) thou shalt demonstrate the joy of learning; (3) thou shalt keep your eyes on the prize; (4) thou shalt be organized and accountable; (5) thou shalt ask and ye may receive; (6) thou shalt be fair and prepared; (7) thou shalt use some common sense; (8) thou shalt be open-minded and flexible; (9) thou shalt not work in fear; and (10) thou shalt raise your expectations. Each section describes the commandment, presents personal stories, and offers relevant quotes. (SM)
