This simulation allows students to participate in the "ways" of ancient Chinese history and culture. The unit is organized into five major phases or "li's." Students may spend about one week on activities in each "li" which focuses on a major aspect of Chinese history, culture, or geography. In each "li" students participate in activities that highlight the "seven intelligences" and learn the geography, literature, history, art, science, philosophy, and religion of one of the world's oldest countries. In these phases, students join one of five clans, called "hsing," with each representing one of the cardinal directions and holding a unique position in the universe; all are symbolically important to Chinese philosophy. Each "hsing" has its own student guide containing background materials and directions for various activities. The "li's" include: (1) "Introduction to Chinese Culture"; (2) "The Great Wall"; (3) "The Silk Road"; (4) "The Forbidden City"; and (5) "The Banquet of Fortune." Team-building and collaborative activities are essential to this unit. (Includes five student guides.) (EH)
