MS 2821 comprises the records of the Commonwealth Council including correspondence files of the secretary, director, Research Committee chairman and treasurer, minutes and agenda, speeches of R.G. Casey and financial records. The records relate to the major functions of the Institute including administration of the Dyason and Roy Milne lecture series, the Reciprocal Exchange Programme, Foreign Affairs Club and the Research Programme; liaison with state branches, the Institute of Pacific Relations, Royal Institute of International Affairs and other bodies; and, production of Australian outlook and other publications. Some records of the Canberra and New South Wales Branches of the Institute are also contained in the collection (134 boxes, 1 medium folio box).
The Acc04.083 instalment includes minutes and other papers relating to annual general meetings, 1987-1997; and, national executive meeting papers, 1987-1997 (4 A3 cartons).
The Acc09.102 instalment comprises minutes of Canberra Branch meetings, 1936-1955 (1 vol.); file on Dyason lecturer (Trevelyan); president's correspondence file, 1942-1943; record of the 12th Council meeting of the National Youth Council of Australia, 1967 (1 vol.); Chatham House and IPR correspondence file, inward 1935 and 1939, and carbon outwards (1 box).

The Australian Institute of International Affairs is an independent and non-political body founded in 1932 to stimulate interest in and understanding of international affairs among its members and the general public. Other functions of the Institute include organising national and international conferences, sponsoring lecture series and carrying out an extensive research and publications program.
