In 1992, Congress established the Juvenile Mentoring Program (JUMP). This report describes the initial stages of the ongoing evaluation of 93 projects funded under JUMP and includes its preliminary findings, which suggest hope for the future. Positive outcomes of the evaluations to date include reports from both mentors and youth that mentoring was a positive experience, and that youth benefited from the experience, especially by staying away from alcohol and drugs, avoiding fights and friends who are trouble, keeping away from gangs, and not using guns or knives. The report begins with an overview of JUMP programs. The second chapter describes individual JUMP grants and the intervention models grantees have selected. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 provide descriptions of the youth being served, their volunteer mentors, and the nature of their mentoring relationship. The report also presents initial evaluation findings and some promising indicators of success. Four appendixes list JUMP grant awards by state, a summary of the grant awards, grantee locations, and additional resources. (Contains 22 exhibits and 45 references.) (SLD)
